Alpha Course

Richard Harlow is running an Alpha course via Zoom for anyone in the Benefice starting on Tuesday 15 September.

Alpha is a chance to ask those questions about Christian faith that we don’t get a chance to ask in services. Each session includes a film covering a topic, such as “How do I pray?” “Why did Jesus die?” “How does God guide us?”, which is followed by an hour of discussion. There are about 12 sessions, but you can leave the course at any time. Each session will run from 7.30pm to 9pm.

If you would like to have a look at the first video, you can view it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBMMD5C0k-s

Weekly Notices – 06 Sep 2020

From Rev’d Gill

Most of us settle into a rhythm every September that’s engrained since school days. The pattern is familiar; stiff new school shoes, too short hair, and the mix of excitement and anxiety of a new year. I learned this week that these two words, anxiety and excitement, come from the same root and, this September we find ourselves holding both in a strange kind of tension. Familiar things that now look different can disorientate and worry us, and yet there can be a frisson of excitement about the potential for something new which we mustn’t ignore.

We can take encouragement from today’s Collect prayer which reminds us that God searches us and knows us – God knows how we feel, each one of us, whatever age, in our anxiety, and we can say  –  God, ’we can rely on you in strength and rest on you in weakness’ in whatever we face this week. Let’s expect God to speak to us, whether at a ‘burning bush’ or in the everyday aspects of our life, and let’s make the most of exciting opportunities with all God’s courage as we take risks in the kingdom of God. You might send a card or letter, speak words of encouragement to a neighbour, consider joining a small group on Zoom to deepen your relationship with God. (If you are interested in a course please speak to Gill or Steve).

Collect for 06 Sep 2020
Almighty God,
you search us and know us:
may we rely on you in strength
and rest on you in weakness,
now and in all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

For our prayers this week

  • Chloe, Pat Wickham’s granddaughter recovering from a traumatic injury
  • Jack, Pat’s son-in-law, in a medically induced coma
  • Margaret Downing, adapting to her new surroundings at Marnel Lodge Care Home
  • All who feel lonely or anxious
  • Teachers and children adapting to school

During the week:

Tuesday and Thursday – Daily Morning Prayer at 8 am – in church and on Facebook Live.  All are welcome to join us as we pray together.  You may also watch the video and follow the short prayer service at any time on Facebook.

Wednesday at 10am – Morning Prayer in church and on Zoom – please contact Charles Lewis if you would like to attend in person.  All are welcome to join on Zoom. We are working to improve the audio quality and the Zoom experience.

Sunday 30th AugustSt Mary’s Outdoor All-Age Service at 4pm on the lawn.

We’re making the most of the possibilities for meeting together at safe distance which is more achievable outside where we can gather in larger numbers. Please join us at 4pm to talk and share our picnics before a short service. We may not be able to sing but we will be treated to the beautiful voice of Shannon who has made a recording for our worship. The marquee will be set up (please let Steve know if you can help that morning) and there will be tables and chairs or rugs. Please dress for the weather that day (right now is forecast as sunny and breezy) and don’t forget your picnic! If you are able to offer a lift within the safety guidelines – both wearing masks, guest sitting diagonally at the rear, no physical assistance for getting in and out) please let Charles Burge know as he is trying to ensure all who want to join us may be able to so.

Ongoing Worship at St Mary’s

It was so good to meet up on August 3rd and we want to keep you informed that we are considering further options for potentially meeting for worship inside the church and via Zoom. To that end we are doing a “Practice Eucharist” on Wednesday 2nd September at 10am in the main church. If you would like to be part of that as we assess together what is practicable please contact Rev Gill as numbers will be limited and face coverings will have to be worn.

Weekly Email – 26 July 2020

Dear Church Family,
It was so very good to see many of your faces after a long while on Wednesday evening at ‘Twenty-Three’ as we walked the labyrinth for the very first time. We’ll have some photos to show as we begin worship together. If you didn’t feel able to come or just couldn’t, there are other opportunities and you can always walk it alone any time at all. If you’d like some guidance about doing so please contact me as I have some I can send.
Next Saturday morning, August 1st, we have Casa Artis at Twenty-Three from 9am till noon. There will be some organised creative activities alongside lots of free time to work on personal projects and paint and draw in response to the garden. All welcome from secondary age up.
Save your tin cans please for a community wind chime project on Wednesday 19th August in the afternoon, where we will do other activities for all ages and walk the labyrinth. If not then, come and walk by candlelight, gathering from 8.30, beginning to walk after 9pm.
If you know of a group in our community, friends, neighbours, social organisation, etc. please encourage them to walk the labyrinth and some of us can lead in a safe way for all.
Here is the link for worship and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
With every blessing for the coming week. Steve and I are away and the Church Wardens, Charles Burge and Marilyn Lewis are on hand, so please do not hesitate to contact them.
Rev’d Gill
