Weekly Notices – 21 Feb 2021

From Rev’d Gill

The CTAT Unity Service is today, Sunday 21st February at 4pm

This is an online gathering to give thanks for what God has done among the churches of Tadley over the past year, and to say our farewells to Gill and Steve Sakakini. The Zoom joining details will be sent by email – contact Gill if you have not received the details and would like them.

For the week beginning 22 February, 2021:

Looking forward

  • Luke in Lent – throughout Lent we will be able to hear/read/see daily reflections (on Facebook, by email or printed).  These take us through the gospel of Luke, with different voices across the benefice, including some of our own from St Mary’s! If you do not want to receive these by email please let Peter Wood know, (peter.wood487@btinternet.com).
  • Farewell Zooms – We are not able to say farewell in the way we’d love to, but we are arranging a number of opportunities to say ‘good-bye’. Some will be ‘doorstep’ encounters, and some are over tea and coffee on Zoom. The Zoom joining details will be sent separately by email.

Farewell Morning coffee – Feb 22, 2021 11:00am

Farewell drinks (of any kind) with the Sakakinis Feb 23, 2021 7:30pm

Farewell afternoon cuppa – Feb 24, 2021 4:00pm

Things are happening at Garden 23!  Steve spotted this tiny iris in bloom while casually walking through the labyrinth.  Come, walk the garden path and take a look at what plants and flowers you can find! Surely signs of good things to come!   You can watch the Garden 23 video on the St Mary’s website here: https://st-marys-church-tadley.org.uk/garden-23-video/

If you have any questions or would like to contact Rev Gill, please phone the Vicarage on 01189 279 321

Welcome to St Mary’s Tadley

Weekly Notices – 14 Feb 2021

The week beginning 15th February, 2021:

From Rev’d Gill,

Morning Prayer Service on Wednesday 17th February. Please contact
Charles Lewis for zoom joining details. c_m.lewis@btinternet.com. All are welcome!

Tuesday & Thursday Daily Morning Prayer at 8am on Facebook Live.  All are welcome to join us as we pray together.  You may also watch the video and follow the short prayer service at any time on Facebook.

Wednesday Living Word (no Compline this week). Please ask Rev’d Gill for the Zoom joining details. Please note this is the last week of these services led by Gill and Steve.

Vickie Ward’s funeral service will take place on Tuesday 16th February at St Mary’s at 3pm.

Ash Wednesday – A pre-recorded Holy Communion Service, which can be viewed any time, but we recommend joining together at 7pm.

There are a few ways to participate
Send in the cross shapes you’ve made and photographed (or
get in touch and I’ll photograph them).
Since we can’t use traditional ash from palm crosses, you can,
if you wish, make your own from soil or cocoa powder mixed
with a little oil. If you don’t believe me, listen to Daren, Head
Virger on YouTube at Winchester Cathedral as he explains! https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=utlJzqQ02Vo

Luke in Lent – begins on Ash Wednesday with daily reflections by people from our benefice community, including some of our own at St Mary’s! If you do not want to receive these via email please let Peter Wood know,
(peter.wood487@btinternet.com). Please let me know if you are able to print and take a version to others without internet access.

Farewell Zooms – Save the date(s)! Since we aren’t able to say farewell
in the way we’d love to, we’re arranging a number of opportunities,
some will be ‘doorstep’ ones and others on Zoom. Joining details will
be given next Sunday for 22 Feb at 11am, 23 Feb at 7.30pm, and 24th
Feb at 4pm.

Weekly Notices – 31 Jan 2021

From Rev’d Gill

As promised and as mentioned on Sunday, here is the link to watch more of the video and music by the group Epiphany expressing lament during the pandemic.

Epiphany video and music

A reflection on the altar frontal of The Wedding at Cana by Margaret Brackenborough

When I first saw the altarpiece at the beginning of the service sheet on Sunday I didn’t even think of Epiphany. My first impression was of creation with those glorious colours representing the four elements of earth, air, fire and water, all intermingling and flowing through and around each other with no beginning and no end and the detail was the richness within creation with nothing repeating and everything moving forward. I absolutely love it.

I can see the story of Epiphany and the water into wine in the piece, but for me I will always see creation with all those amazing colours and textures.

Thank you, Margaret, for your thoughtful response. Please send any more thoughts or reflections you may have had.

 For your prayers

  • Please continue to hold Vickie’s sons, Greg and Lewis, and family in prayer. Funeral details below.
  • Please continue to pray for the Jeff family, Jane, Jane, Ian, Kieran, and Hayden following the death of Jane’s brother John, and for Pat Wickam and family following the death of Jack.
  • We had news that Margaret Downing is in hospital.  Please pray for her and for those caring for her.
  • Please pray for all who face this week with fear or in loneliness, for those suffering in our hospitals, and all who work in the NHS and in caring professions.
  • Please send any prayer requests to us so we can include them here, if you wish.

Vickie Ward

Vickie Ward’s funeral service will take place on Tuesday 16th February at St Mary’s at 3pm. It will be live-streamed, and Greg and Lewis invite any of Vickie’s friends from St Mary’s to come to church. Please be mindful of the risks associated with doing so and let me know if you would like to come, space permitting.

Here is a link from the Bible Society that a few people passed on to me. Our community Garden 23 features in a Bible reading guide! The bulbs in the garden are emerging and showing us signs of spring hope which we very much need.

Epiphany Chapel altar frontal – Turning Water into Wine, designed by Sophie Hacker, Winchester Cathedral 2021

From Rev’d Gill

We always look forward to meeting together in worship and fellowship to support and encourage each other, and to grow and to give to our community and neighbours. We are especially grateful for those who are generously helping others with tech matters in these recent weeks, as this is a lifeline, especially during lockdown.

During this season of Epiphany, we continue to ponder ‘epiphanies’ in our own lives, those glimpses of God breaking in, giving us moments of recognition. We pray that God reveals himself more and more to us in these days which are hard to live through. Thank you for the myriad ways you keep each other lifted up. It is a precious gift to offer.

Notices for St Mary’s Church, Tadley

Dear St Mary’s Family,

Vickie Ward

Vickie and Sally painting silk for the Lumen Project 2018

It is with sadness that we share news of the death of our friend Vickie Ward on Friday 15th January. Vickie loved sitting at the front on the left at St Mary’s and often had little things such as newspaper cuttings in her bag to give people. Vickie was a longtime faithful member at St Mary’s who attended Sunday worship weekly until the first lock-down period and occasionally via zoom, even from her hospital bed. She will be missed and remembered by many in the St Mary’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with her two sons, Greg and Lewis, whom she adored and who took great care of her in the difficult recent months. There will be a service at St Mary’s in due course to which you are invited by Greg bearing in mind all restrictions and well-being.

Here is an extract from Greg’s email that he wished to share with us:

“For anyone who maybe hasn’t had a very recent update, they finally diagnosed Mum with a large liver tumour around Christmas time and they then moved to palliative care.  Just as she was about to be moved to a care home a week ago she contracted Covid and was moved to a Covid ward elsewhere in the hospital.  She was then moved to Alton Community Hospital for her last couple of days which was much more peaceful environment where they specialise in elderly rehabilitation and end of life care. I was able to visit her there yesterday and whilst she didn’t respond I believe she heard me and was perhaps waiting for my visit.

Her journey has come to an end now and she is at peace”.

Please take advantage of the many offerings beginning this week across Tadley, Pamber Heath and Silchester – The Bible Course, The Prayer Course, and the choice of two Alpha Courses (one in the Benefice and one at St Michael’s). Please contact, respectively, Rev’d Richard on 0118 981 4860 or Father Patrick on 0118 981 4572 if are interested in attending.

Wednesday at 7.30pm – Living Word on Zoom followed by Compline at approximately 8.15pm on Zoom and on Facebook Live – please let Revd Gill know if you would like to join the Zoom meeting. All are welcome!  More information can be found on St Mary’s Tadley website Living Word.

The Winchester Diocese has alerted us to remind everyone to be vigilant about Scams and Potential Fraud especially during the COVID pandemic. Please be careful if ever asked to provide bank details to prove your identity, especially to any person not known to you. The NHS will never ask for a person’s banking details

With every blessing,

Rev’d Gill

Weekly Notices – 10 Jan 2021

During the week:

Tuesday and Thursday – Daily Morning Prayer at 8am begins again this week – on Facebook Live.  All are welcome to join us as we pray together.  You may also watch the video and follow the short prayer service at any time on Facebook.

Wednesday at 10am – Morning Prayer on Zoom – please let Charles Lewis know if you would like to attend and he will send you the joining details.  All are welcome!

St Mary’s remains open for private prayer on Wednesdays and Saturdays generally but please note – on Wednesday 13th the church will be closed as there will have been a funeral the day before and we want to allow ample time for cleaning.

Wednesday Morning Prayer Service is led by Charles Lewis, please contact him for details.

On Thursday 14th there is a CTAT Forum and AGM. This is the collective group of Churches Together Around Tadley which hosts events such as the Arts Festival, Holiday Club, Unity Services and is a key part of the Tadley Hub helping with shopping and prescriptions. If you would like to know more or want to attend this meeting please contact Sally Wood or Andrew Thompson.

During the lock-down it is very meaningful to be in touch with each other regularly so if you would like to have a Church Directory or wish your contact details to be included in the next version please let Peter Wood know.

And finally, the Diocese has alerted us to the following COVID Vaccination Scam Alert. It is SO easy to be drawn into scam calls so please hang up on any calls where you are asked for bank information, however kind they seem. There have been reports of a new scam where a person receives a text saying they need to book a vaccination appointment and it takes them to a fake NHS form which then asks for their bank details to prove their identity. The NHS will never ask for a person’s banking information so please do not provide as it will be a scam

With every blessing,

Rev’d Gill

Weekly Notices – 03 Jan 2021

Dear Church Family,
I trust Christmas was restful and meaningful, if strange at times. Now, as we settle into our Tier 4 restrictions we recognise once again the need to do what we’re being asked to keep the greatest number of people safe which means staying at home most of the time, so please do contact us with any needs and we’ll aim to help out.

Our homes will be the focus of much of what we do in these days, and it seems appropriate to recall that Epiphany tradition of asking God to bless our homes. By writing the blessing inscription over our doors we’re daily reminded that God watches over us and brings his Light into our homes and lives. Please find the blessed chalks in individual bags in the church foyer for you to collect and use. If you’d like someone to do this for you please contact me. An Epiphany Prayer to go along with the chalk can be found here!

Epiphany blessing above St Mary’s Tadley doors – 2021

We continue our worship on Zoom every Sunday and this Wednesday the mid-week Morning Prayer Service will be that way too. If you have not joined worship on Zoom yet or are unsure about it I’d encourage you to give it a go. From about 10am on a Sunday morning the waiting room is open and you can join from then by simply clicking on the link provided in the email. For the foreseeable future this is going to be our main  way of being in fellowship and, while no substitute for the real thing, most find it a connecting and positive experience. Please get in touch with Steve or Peter if you’d like to be coached on how to join Zoom!

Join us on Sunday Mornings

Since we’re staying put it’s good to have opportunities to meet in other ways, and I’d like to draw your attention to three courses that are beginning after January 10th which will allow you to meet others and grow in your faith. All are cross-benefice with our partners at St Paul’s and St Lukes, and St Mary the Virgin in Silchester. You may join the Prayer Course, the Bible Course, or the Alpha Course. Please ask me for details of any you may be interested in. (Julie Dollin would be happy to tell you about her experience on a recent Alpha), and the other two are solid ways to deepen your relationship with God and others.

Weekly Notices – 29 Nov 2020

Dear all,
I hope you will be able to join in our service tomorrow morning – Advent Sunday – and that you all have all received your Advent Journey booklet which includes the order of service. If you haven’t, please look on the website while yours arrives! The link is below:
https://st-marys-church-tadley.org.uk/services/advent-journey/

It’s been another week of adjustments and decision making for us all and I know there will be disappointments about Christmas and that it’s challenging and tiring weighing up the ‘right’ thing to do. As the time approaches we want to make sure everyone is well cared for and connected, so let’s keep talking about that. However, in light of the guidelines we will be able to have some services in the church again, though we’ll keep our Sunday’s on Zoom and Wednesday Morning Prayer I draw your attention to the following things that are planned:

  • Christingle on Sunday 13th at 4pm, partly outside, partly inside.
  • Blue Christmas (a reflective quiet service for Christmas) on Sunday 19th at 4pm in Church and on Zoom. Please email me to book a place.
  • Christmas Shed Carol Services with a difference, Sunday 20, Monday 21, Tuesday 22nd (at St Mary’s) and Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th at St Paul’s, all at 6pm except 24th at 4pm. St Mary’s is hosting on the 20th. Please do share the attached poster.
  • Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve at 11pm, finishing before midnight to avoid any revellers! Please email me to book a place.
  • Christmas Morning Zoom – to share greetings at 10am

Zoom invitations to follow …..
Extra help needed for biscuit making as we’d like to give them away at Christingle and on the 20th. Please let Heather Saunders know (at coffee) if you’d like to make any and she will collect them from you in advance.
Also we would like to give a good St Mary’s welcome to all who come to the Christmas Shed opening on the 20th Dec. Please email Greg Whittick to let him know as he’s organising the teams. gregw@bccnet.org.uk
Thank you to Andrew and Charles for constructing the Christmas Shed!

With Advent blessings!

Rev’d Gill
